Understanding and Managing Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Welcome to Our BPH Information Center
At Dr. Amjad Alwaal’s Urology Clinic, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive care and education about Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). This condition, often known as benign prostate hypertrophy, is common in aging men and can significantly impact quality of life.
What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia?
BPH is a condition characterized by the enlargement of the prostate gland. This enlargement can lead to urinary problems due to pressure on the urethra. It’s not the same as prostate cancer and doesn’t increase the risk of cancer. Common symptoms include:
• Difficulty starting urination.
• Weak or interrupted urine stream.
• Frequent urination, especially at night.
• Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.
Diagnosing BPH
A precise diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment. Our clinic uses various diagnostic methods, including:
• Digital Rectal Exam (DRE): To feel the size and texture of the prostate.
• Urine Test: To check for infection or other urinary tract issues.
• Blood Test: To measure prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, which can indicate prostate health.
• Uroflowmetry: Measuring the strength and amount of urine flow.
Treatment Options
Our approach to treating BPH is patient-specific and may include:
• Medications: To relax prostate muscles or shrink the prostate.
• Minimally Invasive Therapies: Such as UroLift.
• Surgical Options: For more significant cases, procedures like Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), HoLEP laser surgery may be considered.
Our focus is on reducing symptoms and improving your overall urinary health.
